Chapter 9

The color drained from Ms. Canmore’s face as she whirled around to face the students again. She motioned to the other professors, and within seconds, they had dispersed to clear us away from the quad.

“Back to the dorms, everyone!” Stone called out as he waved us away from the quad. “Follow your professor!”

“This way, guys,” Hudson ushered the pushers toward the opposite dorms. “Nothing to see here.”

“There’s definitely something to see,” I said under my breath to my friends. “Stay close.”

We followed the wave of students toward our corner of campus, and I yanked Penny, Auden, and Charlotte into the shifter dorm with me before any of the professors noticed. Then we scurried into my room, and I shut the door behind us and let out the breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding.

“What the hell is going on?” Penny asked as worry lined her pretty face. “I’ve never seen Ms. Canmore freaking out like that.”

“Because she wasn’t expecting there to be real blood in the fountain,” I said with a grimace. “Pearson figured it out. I heard them whispering.”

“Who would do that?” Charlotte gasped. “Real blood? That’s fucking creepy.”

“What’s even creepier is trying to figure out whose blood it is,” Auden muttered. “Was it human?”

“They didn’t say,” I answered. “I should have tried to smell it with my tiger senses, but I didn’t think about it. I don’t know if I’d be able to tell the difference between animal and human blood anyway.”

“So, what does it mean?” Penny whispered as she began to pace around my room. “Does anyone really think it was a prank?”

“If it was, someone is a sick fuck,” I said and clenched my fists. “Pranks are meant to be funny, not to scare the shit out of everyone.”

“Okay, so if it isn’t a prank, where did it come from?” Charlotte asked. “With all the other weird stuff we were just talking about, it can’t be a coincidence.”

“Well, maybe we can look that up, too,” Auden said as he dropped his bag on the floor and unzipped it to reveal a stack of books. “I snuck a few out of the library with us. It’s not like anyone’s going to miss them.”

“Good call.” I nodded to him. “We need to look around the same timeframe as the seventeen hundreds’ asteroids and see if there are any reports of, uh, something like this.”

“Bloody fountains?” Charlotte arched an amused eyebrow at me.

“Or bloody water, maybe?” I shrugged. “I’m not sure, but I think we’ll know it when we see it.”

I was glad to start researching the weird shit again. It felt like we were doing something useful, and even though part of me knew the homework and tests were important, I was determined to figure out what all the ominous signs meant. I had to prepare myself for this destiny and fulfill the prophecy, and I couldn’t do that if I had no idea what to prepare for.

The memories of my battle-filled dreams seeped into my thoughts, and I wondered if the faceless nemesis from my sleep was the one to blame for these events.
